Just out of college, a friend of mine, Peggy Aulino, volunteered with the University of Dayton Summer Appalachia Program. She wasn’t a UD graduate, but she had a friend who went there and got her interested in the program. A year later, in 1981, Peggy was a reporter for a newspaper in our native New Jersey. She convinced her editor to send her back to Salyersville to do a story on the "Dayton Kids." This time, she brought me along to photograph it. Recently I scanned my original Tri-X negatives and emailed a bunch to Peggy. This generated the idea to return to Salyersville thirty years later. Peggy found exhibition space at the Renaissance Center in town and contacted the local newspaper about our show. The publicity brought many people out that 4th of July weekend. We reunited with old friends and discovered the identities of a number of people in the pictures.
