Laurie,
Great site, brings back alot of memories of the Boro. Grew up on Gordon Ave. Played bugle in the parade, Many trips on Bogart Rd,(River Rd.) We chased Annie the ghost, Hung at Cozy's, Pappy's(late 60's), Hilltop Esso, trips to Greenwood Lake, gang fights with Paterson and Wayne, etc.
Your pictures of Cozy's are unreal. Hanging in the Boro was the in thing if you where a Boro Boy.
Thanks for the Momories.
Regards,
Ted Grabowski

Laurie, I love the "work in progress" and the article in The Record. Growing up in the same time period with my own "Reefer Roads" and hanging around my town, I now see that we all shared the same fears and loathing! We were honored to have included Sal in the Weird NJ book and have you on the video.

A wonderful trip down memory lane. Having worked in the Totowa Schools for 34 years, I should recognize more of the people in the pictures. But Middle School educators tend to have a permanent picture of former students in their minds as 14 year-olds. It may be disappointing to know that I believe none of you has ever grown up, but the good news is I believe none of you has grown old as I have.

I lived in Totowa from 1970 - 1988. My Dad Joe Trione was an administrator with the Totowa school system. Thank you so much for sharing these pictures that capture the essence of our special little town. I was just in Totowa in October 2003 and was dismayed to see that Cozy's was gone. And while Pappy's may look nicer with the renovations, I miss the old place horribly. Thanks again for sharing your memories with us.

Bill MacFarlane, Loved the web site. I was at Cozy's in the 60's. A little bit earlier that you, but I recognized Deach and others. In my day we had Duva, Leo Grande, Nordyk, Scholar, D'Auito.... the River Rats and Hillsiders rivalry. Jiggers, my brother Mark in the cemetary. I lived next to it on Totowa Road. Thanks for the memories.

One of my dearest friends, Glenn sent me this site today, i laughed, i cried, i relived many fond memories. I grew up in West Paterson and i remember all the people that hung out in the bank parking lot. Especially Danny Davis. I miss everyone so much, especially my brother Patrick. I too spent my teen years in the cemetary looking for a glimpse of Anne, but never saw her. Thanks for the excellent job you did, and thanks for the memories... Patti...

Laurie, While I was reading the paper on Wednesday, (I was reading Tuesdays Herald always alittle behind) I saw the picture of Kim and she looked familar but I never remembered her wearing makeup then as I read I got chills all over. I used to hang out w/ Kim when I was in High School, w/ Dave Pepe the Russos, Pat LeoGrande etc. She was such a beautiful person, as a matter of fact I partied plenty of times I think it was in your basement? My mind is alittle burnt from those wonderful days of parting at the P.A.L. and in the bank parking lot in front of Hubburds Cubbard etc. Kim and I lost touch after I was 16 I'm sooooo sorry to here of her passing you're right she was always smiling and you are an awesome person to keep Kim and your Dads memory alive in such a cool way. Please e-mail me if you can I feel like I need to know how her life was from 1986 on :) Thanks for the memories Trish Costa (McNamara)

I believe she went to school with my brother Garth. You may remember my brother Gavin. I also climbed the elk and almost broke my neck getting down. The playground of my youth was the cemetary. I once fell into the pond ice skating. So many pictures, so many memories, I am looking forward to the book. Best Regards, Christine (Hannah) Cosmillo

What a great site. For years I have passed your dad's and sister's stones on the way to visit my in-laws graves. I always thought what wonderful people they must have been to have family remember them in such a really neat way. I enjoyed your site very much. Glad you made it out of Totowa!MY husband &I grew up and lived in Paterson, near Boonstra=s Dairy-now Gilotti's. We owned a Carvel on Union Blvd. across from the post from 78 til 90 . I pretty much spent every Sund. growing up at Laurel Grove visiting my moms grave. I am always intrigued when visiting by all the different headstones and how the styles refect the time of the persons passing. Good luck in your book-Look forward to buying a copy . Hi Laurie-
My sister Lisa was very good friends with Kim when they were kids, I cried after seeing the pics - my sister is also buried at Laural Grove. My brother Mark worked for your dad, I had Ariola for photog. class too. I was younger, but remember all of you hanging out at Irving Svgs and the rock by Walker's. I was at Cozy's all the time. Enjoyed seeing Danny Smith.
Thanks for capturing the Totowa of our youth.

Hi! It was kind of by accident that I found your site. I was born in Totowa (well, actually in Paterson General Hospital) in 1935. You talk about all the cemeteries- I LIVED IN MT NEBO where my father, Lou Bemler, was the 3rd male in the Bemler family to be the superintendent of the cemetery. I knew about the Elk because the Bemler plot in Laurel Grove is near the sculpture. I was too small to climb on the Elk, BUT I often climbed on the metal lions that flanked the entrance to the Barnert mausolaum in the center of the cemetery. (He had been the first Jewish mayor of Paterson). By the way, since 1955, while a student at Monclair State Teachers College, I have been studying the history of the Lenape Indians, and this Sept. will start my 40th year of lecturing about them to school and adult groups in Burlington Co. and south.

I just wanted to thank you for capturing the essence of this place we have called home for the past 30 years. It is difficult to describe, but there is something that keeps it's residents local and loyal. We grew up on Dewey ave, and would hop the fence, it would seem like daily or nightly to play in our "Park" Jumping in freshly dug graves was the equivalent to most kids ride on a swing set. I am going to create a series of T-shirts commemorating certain landmarks in Totowa, if anyone would be interested in having one, please feel free to e-mail me at the addreess above.

Thanks again,

Laurie,
Great job!!! You're creativity is still flowing!!
It made me run and get my yearbook from Memorial School 1973 and look through all the pictures of everyone. In my yearbook you wrote that you would always remember my dumb comments in Miss Duffy's class. You even drew a picture of a spear carrying native named "Oscar". Do you still have him? Miss Duffy's class was great. I still remember all the creative writing and things we did there!
Peace to you! Ed

Hi Laurie,

I went to Murph's on St Patty's Day, haven't been there for about 10 yrs. Paul D. mentioned your web site. It brought back alot of memories, the Bank, Pappy's, and especially Cozy's. Your stories pretty much let you taste life in Totowa back in the 70's. It was nice to see some of the old faces and how we remember them. I was happy you included my mother in one of your Cozy shots. I know she enjoyed spending time there.
Thirty years later we may be different people with different lives but your photographs help remind us of who we were and we we came from.

Thanks, Laurie keep up the good work!

Great site. I went to the laundromat, started bullshitting with the attendant and somewhere our conversation led to a common denominator: Totowa.
I can remember my friendship with Mike Giordino, and despite the unbalanced and warped societial view of the drug culture, we had peaceful good times, memories smoking pounds of tea in Mike's refinished basement with Lori and the Totowa crew of the years 73-75.

Wednesday I took a trip to Totowa to visit my parents. After a while, my mother informed me that Monte had died Sunday. Following the initial shock, a wave of sadness came over me. Here was an innocent, a good person who fell victim to circumstance. I remember running into him from time to time when I still lived in Totowa. He was always happy to see me and converse. Afer a few moments, however, he would wander off into verbal incongruities and one knew it was time to move on. I heard his father used to let him sleep in his shed, not allowing him in the house. Such was his horror and inability to fathom what had become of his own son. (This is hearsay, and I mean no disrespect to his father.)

I wonder what happened to him. Did he freeze to death in the terrible cold, or become fatally ill from exposure to the elements? What a shame, I feel so sad. Anyone of us could have ended up that way if fate dealt us the hand. Another Totowa legen
